Read about Ha11y!
In the beginning of 2022, I got to participate in the University of Nebraska at Lincoln Cornhacks! This is a 24-hour hackathon where you and a team of up to three others develop a program in 24 hours.
My team developed Ha11y, an accessibility program where a user can enter in their disability and then our web crawler--Ha11y-- will rank a website's accessibility based on that user's disability right in the google search. Ha11y is a Google Chrome extension.
This was needed as 61 million (about in every four) Americans have a disability and the vast majority of the web is inaccessible, having to repeatedly load webpages and the page not working for a user can be extremely frustrating. We followed WCAG standards and Deque's (a leading accessibility firm) rankings of violations based on varying disabilities.
Fun fact: Ha11y was named after Victoria Hall, one of the most famous WW2 spies, who also happened to have a disability. A11y is the international sign for accessibility, the 11 represents the number of letters between 'a' and 'y'.
We were very fortunate to be able to win First Place at the 2022 Cornhacks!
